Our Clever Chhap!

KUNAL

It is perhaps quite fitting that our fuel scheduler Kunal Chhapia was born in the city that holds THE largest oil refinery on Earth. The vast Indian city of Jamnagar is actually known as the de facto petroleum hub of the world. Kunal ‘three degrees’ Chhapia (as we like to call him!) is a rather studious man. After interviewing him, it is clear that his passion in life is learning, to gain as much knowledge and information as he can get his hands on. It was his inspirational 7th-grade teacher Mr.Tarak who changed his approach to education.

Passion For Learning

Kunal left his hometown at 16 to go to study in Pune (known as ‘the Oxford of the East’) and then Bombay where he studied Biotechnology. As part of his internship, Kunal had to analyse DNA samples from crime scenes for forensics. He then gained another degree, this time in Marketing and Finance. He was selected to go to East Africa to work on a project, where he promoted agricultural products for the Export Trading Company (ETG). “It was an exciting place to live,” he said, “but we had to keep our wits about us, as we were in a high-risk area.” One time, when his parents visited him, his mother was actually held up in his kitchen by a man holding a gun to her head! “My mother was lucky and managed to get away without being harmed,” he said.

He was inspired to move to Perth because of Curtin University and also his brother-in-law Kush Doshi (who was working for Boral WA at the time). With his credentials, he studied for a Masters in Commerce Logistics and Supply Chain Management. His rather clever wife, Neha, has two degrees and they are both currently studying for a further one, in Data Science.

“Thankful To My Parents”

“I thank my father for all his teachings and life learnings,” he said. “For almost every decision I make, I ask myself, what would my dad do if he were in my shoes? I try to be like him, he was a remarkable man,” he smiles “And for my mother, I thank her for all the opportunities.” It was Kunal’s mother who pushed him to explore the world. “I was a shy child, and it was my mother who made me face the world and told me that there is no better teacher than the experiences life will give you.”

It is here where we must mention the tragic circumstances of how Kunal lost both his parents. In 2019, after a long battle with cancer, he lost his beloved mother. Then, October 2020, within only a short time of being admitted to hospital, his father tragically died from COVID-19. Kunal was incredibly close to both his parents, and he and his brother have since also lost two of their uncles to this terrible virus. It has been an absolutely harrowing time for the 35-year-old, made worse by the fact that he could not attend his father’s funeral due to the travel restrictions. Yet with all this on his shoulders, our man still keeps working and still keeps his happy-go-lucky persona.

KEE Fuel Business Boom

Kunal became part of the KEE family in 2017 when the fuel side of the company was just starting out and was averaging 50,000 litres of fuel a month. Roll on another four years and Kunal and KEE Fuel Manager Leigh Hayward have now grown the business to 1.4 million litres! “Leigh has been my mentor,” he said, “He throws me in at the deep-end sometimes to push my decision-making- and it works! And I’ve learned in building a company you must have patience. As Walter Elliot said ‘Perseverance is not a long race. It is many short races, one after the other’. This is so very true.”

The Australian Mining Review- an article on KEE Group

MINING REVIEW

For mining companies, manufacturing companies, large warehouses and construction companies, heavy plant equipment is an essential asset to get jobs done. If a company needs to move dirt, they could rent an excavator or buy their own. The same goes for transporting materials, whether it’s over land to another location or shipping goods to customers. This is where a plant hire service becomes an ideal option.

The Benefits of a Plant Hire Service

You may be wondering why a mining or construction company would need to rent heavy machinery when they can always buy it? Well, these are a few of the benefits associated with plant hire.

Save Money

Saving money is one of the main reasons. Rental prices for heavy equipment can be much lower than buying it, especially if the company’s only going to use it for a short period.

Purchasing heavy machinery also takes money upfront. And if the machinery has to be shipped to the location, the shipping fees can be astronomical. If a company only needs the machinery for a short period and isn’t going to use it after that, it’s a better option to rent instead.

The company will also save money in the long run because they will only pay to rent the machinery they need.

Save Time

Another advantage to renting over purchasing is that the former takes less time. Finding a machine to do a job for a few months or a couple of years is less time-consuming than the process of purchasing machinery.

Choosing Heavy Equipment for Hire? KEE Provides Three Useful Tips for Hiring Heavy Equipment for Your Plant:

1. Know What Is Needed for the Job

Companies need to rent equipment that fits the job. For example, an excavator may do the job, but it’s not ideal for every situation. The wrong equipment can lead to frustrations, problems and wasted time.

Lighter machinery is better for jobs like digging and moving dirt, while heavier machinery is better for moving large gravel piles.

2. Make Sure You Hire Equipment That’s Easy to Use

It’s also helpful to hire equipment that’s easy to use. If it takes a while to figure out how to operate the equipment, you’re wasting valuable time that could have been spent on getting started with the project. So, in order to maximise the hire period, rent equipment that is easy to operate and is supported by a company that knows and cares.

3. Ensure the Equipment is Insured

This is a very important part to consider, as renting heavy plant machinery can be dangerous if not operated properly and you will need to know what the operator is covered for.

A Plant Hire Service Can Save Time, Money and Effort

At the end of the day, a plant hire service can help companies save money, time and effort.

Rental prices are lower than the price of purchasing, and they can be more affordable than having to maintain purchased machinery that hasn’t been used for a long time.

They can also be convenient when a company only needs the machinery for a short period. If a company decides to purchase heavy machinery, they could have to wait a long time for the equipment to be delivered and also find a space to house it.

KEE Group has all the answers if you need a reputable plant hire company in Perth, Port Hedland, Albany and Australia wide. KEE is Australia’s most effective and unique civil and mining support service. AMR

“One of The Best Drivers I’ve Seen in Perth”

SCOTT

“Scotty is one of THE best drivers I’ve seen in Perth for a long time,” said RJV Site Supervisor Karl Husten. “He can reverse a dolly like no one else, he is a true professional; highly-skilled, punctual, respectful and reliable.” When a client is this impressed with one of our employees, it of course makes us feel exceptionally proud and this year we celebrate Scott Kostin’s ten years of service to KEE Transport.

“Crusty Demons”

Scott’s family moved over from NSW to Perth in 1988 after his Army Engineer dad was posted in WA from Townsville. Coming from a very fitness focussed family, Scott excelled at every sport at school, but it wasn’t until he was 25 that he found his true love, motor-bikes. When he was younger all his mates were into freestyle motor-biking, and they all watched the “Crusty Demons” a group in the USA who made videos of themselves doing daredevil stunts. This inspired Scott and his pals to copy the tricks. They built ramps and jumps in the bush and soon he was hooked. One of Scott’s top stunts is called “A Nothing”, which is where the rider launches himself off a jump, lets go of the handlebars and pedals and ‘starfishes’ so not one part of his body is touching the actual motorbike.

Knocked Out Cold

He now competes in motocross where the jumps are about 25 metres long and he can fly as high as a house! Of course, this kind of crazy activity can lead to various gruesome injuries. For Scott, he has been knocked out cold and stretchered away from competing. He has, in separate instances, shattered his scapula, broken his ribs and de-gloved his finger. The photos of the bruising sustained in another fall can send shivers down your spine!

Yet this lean, mean, speed-demon loves it. He loves the adrenaline and the competition. Asked where his favourite place to be is, he answered without hesitation “on my motorbike”. At the moment he rides a four-stroke Husqvarna FC450. He also owns a 1974 SLR Torana that his dad bought him as his first car for $1k. Now a much sort-after vintage car, it is worth around $100,000!

Ten Years of Service to KEE Transport

Before becoming a transport operator, Scott worked for BGC Asphalt for six years. He then moved on to driving machinery to sites and learned the ropes working for a low-loader firm. Having these two skilled professions under his belt, it was a natural transition to join KEE Group. When asked if he uses a sat-nav for transporting, the 45-year-old said “No need really, I helped build half of the roads we drive on in WA so it’s quite easy for me to find my way around!”

Scott bought a plot of land in Martin and built his own house on it five years ago. “I still have a bit of work to do on it, but now I’ve at last built my man-shed I can finally move the bikes out of the spare room!” He is a life-long member of Coastal Motor-Cycle Club and Scott can be seen competing at the next Manjimup 15000, a three-day event on a world-class track on Sunday, 5 June.

Exceeding Our Expectations

Don’t you just love it when someone exceeds your expectations?

In the hire industry, it is a rare thing to have a machine or vehicle returned to the yard spotlessly cleaned and polished, but this is exactly what happened when Road Line Civil returned a water cart to us after six months on a job in Broome.

This was the work of their star water cart operator Phil Ryman. He has been with Road Line for six years and treats hired plant machinery like it’s his own.

Road Line’s Operations Manager Rudy Braward said, “Phil is a top operator. Everyday, after his shift he cleans every part of dust off of the machine. He even buys his own polish, and when there’s a bit of spare time on site he will polish the cart, section by section.”

“Many hire machines are mistreated on site, so to have a gentleman like Phil actually care for our gear is a breath of fresh air” said KEE Director Clayton Spiers. “He takes pride in his work and that is why he is such a great asset to Road Line and to KEE Hire.”

Rudy said “We have a strong partnership with KEE Group. They are a straightforward, no nonsense say-what-they-mean operation. KEE are easy to deal with, consistently reliable and give us awesome support.”

Based in Broome, Road Line are renowned experts in the fields of earthworks, civil contracting, drainage, pipelaying, infrastructure assets, mining works, heavy haulage and plant hire. Roadline Civil Contractors are approved vendors to major companies such as Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton as well as a number of large and smaller companies and government agencies throughout Perth and the North West of Australia.

How KEE Are Protecting WA’s Turtle Population

TURTLE
KEE Group Northern Command (KGNC) has been enlisted to help with the protection of Flatback Turtles in Port Hedland, after a seawall was washed away during a severe storm. KEE Hire has supplied the necessary machinery to excavate and re-establish the seawall, including the pedestrian beach access.

Mayor Peter Carter said “the new Sutherland Street seawall will help protect properties along the coastline, secure sand dunes, maintain pathway access, mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect our Flatback Turtle friends and their nesting areas on the beach.”

By reconstructing and strengthening Port Hedland’s coastline, together we can ultimately protect the Pilbara’s precious wildlife.

Construction is projected to last until November 2022 and the works are being carried out by our client WA Limestone.
